Lutheran Youth Fellowship (LYF)

The high school youth of St.John, Charter Oak would like to thank you all for your support of our annual Thanksgiving Dinner, held Sunday, November 15, 2015. We served 231 dinners and sent home 36 to-go boxes!

REGULAR MEETINGS ARE HELD AT 7:00PM ON THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH
ALL high school students in the Charter Oak area are always welcome to join St.John's LYF for fun and fellowship, for ministry and service to the community and for study of God's Word.

Our next meeting will be Saturday, December 19 at 7:00PM at Pastor Merrill's house ("the parsonage") across the street from St.John's. Pastor will serve drinks and have a taco-bar set up. Members are invited to bring snacks to share. We're planning on some ping pong!

This February we will be selling ready-to-bake pizzas for Super Bowl Sunday- So please watch this Website and the church bulletins for details.

2015-16 LYF COUNCIL: This year, in lieu of traditional officers like President, Secretary, or Treasurer, we elected a leadership council made up of representatives of each class They are Senior Tristan Kunze, Junior Travis Pautsch, Sophomore Connor Beeck, and Freshman Lizzie Jepsen.

ADULT LEADERS: While Velita Pautsch remains our parent "coordinator," we don't have any one Director of Youth Ministry or Youth Counselor, all high school parents are asked to help with their youth throughout the year. Pastor Merrill is always available for advise and counselling and will generally lead devotions at most LYF activities. Bethany Mallory is the contact person this year for those planning to attend the LCMS National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, next July. Leon Meseck leads weekly High School Bible Study in the church library every Sunday.

Please keep our Youth in your prayers, that God would open their hearts to His Word and that He would draw them into deeper fellowship with Himself, service for His church and greater unity with one another. May the Holy Spirit work in our LYF to make it a light which will draw more and more youth from our area into meaningful relationships with God and each other.

2015-16 St.John LYF Membership: Connor Beeck, Rielly Ellwell, Krista Gierstorf, Colton and Lizzie Jepsen, Skyler Kelm, Tristan Kunze, Allison Maack, Grace Mallory, Alyha McCartney, Hallie and Nolan Neddermeyer, Emily Steffen, and Travis Pautsch. (We apologize for anyone we missed or any misspellings, please report additions or corrections to Ted Mallory, our Webmaster).

ONLINE: Search this Website with the keywords "lyf" or "youth" or the tag "#LYF" for more news or announcements about our youth group activities. LYF members are invited to like and follow St.John's Facebook page or communicate with each other on Twitter with the tag "#LYFstjohnCO."

LWML Sunday 2015 Litany- Seek First the Kingdom of God

Pastor: Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, As we gather to worship You this day, we are worried!

People: May our hearts be opened to trust You!

Pastor: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6).

Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, As we gather to sing praises to You this day, we are distracted!

People: May our eyes be opened to be focused on You!

Pastor: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10).

Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, As we gather to hear Your Word today, we are clinging to so many things!

People: May our hands be opened to let go of the things of this world while clinging to You and Your Word!

Pastor: Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (Matthew 6:26)

Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, As we gather to receive Your forgiveness, our minds are racing!

People: May our mouths be opened to shout hallelujahs to You for Your mercy and grace!

Pastor: Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all (Matthew 6:31-32).

Holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, As we gather to receive Your body and blood today, our lives are cluttered!

People: May our hands be folded in prayers of thanksgiving to You for Your forgiveness!

Pastor: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you (Matthew 6:33).

People: Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy!
Guide us, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, as we seek to put You and Your eternal Kingdom work first in our lives! Amen

A Mighty Fortress

A Mighty Fortress 7
We were standing on the corner, watching the homecoming parade, when I glanced over my shoulder and the sunset behind the old Lutheran Church on the edge of town was amazing. Here it was the last day of September, but it may as well have been the last day of October. I couldn't help myself. I just stood there shooting. Happy "Lutheran Heritage Month!" (I just made that up)

The Giving Quilt Rack

(in loving memory of our past Quilters)
Beginning October 1st we are beginning a new quilting projects. This new journey features a quilt hung over the Quilt Rack in the back of the church by the elevator door. This quilt can be taken by any member of our church family to be given to someone they feel is in need. One does not have to tell where it goes. It is our prayer and hope that the quilts are given from out church family from this "Giving Quilt Rack" will touch the lives and hearts of each and every recipient.
If the Quilt Rack is empty do not dismay, that just means that one has been given to someone in need and another will soon be in it's place. Please join us in this new mission as we share with those around us and may those recipients feel the blessings of our love and prayers within each and every quilt.

Results of Sun. Sept. 13 Special Voters' Meeting

It was moved by Byron Weiss and seconded by Otto Kunze to nominate Brent Friedrichs for service as Lay Delegate from the Mapleton Circuit to the Synodical Convention next Summer. Friedrichs volunteered to be Lay Delegate before receiving the nomination. No other names were placed into nomination.

The Lay Delegate to the Synodical Convention will be decided on by the Circuit Forum next Sunday, Sept. 20. Kevin Clausen is St.John's Lay Delegate to the Circuit Forum.

Brent works for Global Lutheran Outreach (GLO) managing financial and missionary support and logistics. Brent now does his work from home here in Charter Oak, but he and his wife Eugenie served as GLO Missionaries in Nigeria. Before that he served as a business manager with LCMS World Mission in Nigeria and West Africa.

St.John supports the Friedrichs as Missionaries. If he is confirmed as the Lay Delegate, please keep him in your prayers as he represents our Circuit at Convention next Summer. Whether he winds up being the Lay Delegate or not, please continue to support he & his family with your prayers as they continue their work supporting missions in Africa and around the world.

'Camp Discovery' Vacation Bible School 2015

Discover God's Plan! Discover His Purpose!

At Camp Discovery VBS, your children learn that Jesus works inn and through us. They'll look into the Bible, God's Holy Word, and explore five tree-mendous Bible accounts where God works in His people to save them and through His people to serve! Jesus saves us, gives us faith, courage and wisdom to serve Him and share His Good News with our neighbor. God has a plan and a purpose for each of His beloved children!

Registration is open for ages Preschool through Sixth grade who will attend VBS from Sunday, July 26 to Thursday, July 30, 6:00pm-8:30pm. Again this year, we will have a free brown bag lunch for children at 5:30pm. Come along with us as we sing fun songs, do crazy crafts, eat yummy snacks, play awesome games and more. Plus, you'll learn about Jesus our Savior and how He is at work through us! We can't wait to see you there. To register, call Linda in the Church Office at 678-3312 or VBS Director Bethany Mallory at 3397.

    We Need Helpers for VBS

If you would be willing to "host" a group of children by moving them from station to station during VBS, please consider volunteering during this week of adventure as a 'Team Leader.' We also need Kitchen help for the prep and serving of lunches, served from 5:30-6:00pm each evening. The kids also like a simple snack and drink during the evening. We need a team that would be willing to arrange and provide a snack during VBS time.

We also need able hands to help with the Craft Time. Some craft work can be done prior to VBS, some is hands-on during the evenings of VBS. Talk to Bethany Mallory if you can help with kids or kitchen. Please talk with Peggy Sue Henschen if you can help with craft preparation or craft time during VBS.

    Campy Decorations Needed

Out theme this year is all about camping. If you would be willing to share your camp supplies for the week, please contact Bethany or bring them to the Sunday School: Tents (small), fishing tools, tree stump seats, small logs for seating, artificial Christmas trees (without lights), and miscellaneous camping gear like backpacks, beach towels, flashlights, lanterns, etc.

Thank You for your time, supplies, offerings, and especially for your prayer-support!

    We Need Your Help

The 'Thy Strong Word' radio program is in need of money. Help keep this ministry on the air. Consider making a donation toward programming costs. Ask Pastor or the Linda in the office how. Thank you.

The following opportunities to serve came up at the Voter's Meeting, last Wednesday, January 21:

LAY DELEGATE NEEDED to the Iowa District West Convention this Summer at Camp Okoboji, June 21-23. This delegate will participate in the election of District Officials, including a new IDW President. as well as voting on resolutions which will set District goals for the next 3 years. The congregation pays the fees so meals and accommodations will be provided. Please speak to Pastor or Ted Mallory if you would be interested in serving as our Lay Delegate.

MEMORIAL FUND OPPORTUNITY- St.John would like to invest in a set of compact discs of hymns & liturgical music in the even that we ever find ourselves without organists for an extended period of time. If any families have undesignated memorial money and would like to help make this purchase possible, please contact either Karleen Beeck or the church office know.

ST.JOHN PLAYGROUND RESTORATION/IMPROVEMENT- We are establishing a committee to look into ideas for brightening and restoring the old Lutheran School playground. Many children and families use the playground and we also see it as an outreach to the community. Benches, signs, artwork, and new equipment are all ideas being considered. If you have any ideas for the playground or would like to be part of our new "Playground Outreach Committee" please contact Pastor or Ted Mallory.
