Advent Message

Dear Friends in Christ,

Advent is almost here, and one of the traditions we have in the Church is the use of the Advent
wreath. Four colored candles(three blue, one pink)are nestled within the green wreath itself, with a
white candle seated in the center. Each Sunday in Advent an additional candle is lit, until all five candles
burn brightly on Christmas Eve to welcome Jesus, the true light who has come into the world.(John 1:9)
There are two different traditions as to the meaning of the individual candles on the Advent wreath.
For our Sunday sermons in Advent this year we will use the one that fits most closely with our Old
Testament readings.

The first candle(blue)is the Candle of Hope. Just as the promise of a Savior, the righteous Branch
from the stem of Jesse(Jeremiah 33:14-16)brought hope to God's people in their exile in Babylon,so the
coming of that Savior, the one who will reign on the throne of David forever(Luke 1:32-33),has brought
hope to sinners separated from their true home in heaven through the exile of sin.

The second candle(blue)is the Candle of Preparation. At the end of the Old Testament God
promised to send His messenger to prepare the way before Him. (Malachi 3:1) Four hundred years later,
the Word of God came to John the Baptizer in the wilderness, and he began proclaiming a baptism ofrepentance for the forgiveness of sins. John was the Messenger. He prepared the way for Jesus. The
second candle reminds us also to be prepared, through God's gift of repentance and faith, when Jesus
comes again in glory.

The third candle(pink)is the Candle of Joy. One of the all-time favorite Christmas hymns is"Joy to
the World"(LSB 387). We sing of the joy that the coming of Jesus brings to us and to all creation.
Zephaniah 3:17 has a little different take on the joy of Christ's coming. At Jesus'coming, says Zephaniah,
it will be said to God's people,"Fear not,O Zion...The LORD your God is in your midst,a mighty onewho will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over
you with loud singing." Jesus'coming to save us brings joy to God!Now He can have us with Him in
heaven forever!

The fourth candle(blue)is the Candle of Love. This is the hardest candle to fit with the Old
Testament lessons. The lesson for the Fourth Sunday in Advent is from Micah, promising that the Christwill be born in Bethlehem(Micah 5:2). Yet it also talks about the Savior as the one who"shall stand and
shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord." (Micah 5:4)"The King of Love My Shepherd Is." (LSB709) And of course, why did God send His Son to be born? He"so loved the world that He gave His oneand only Son." (John 3:16)

The center candle (white)is the Christ Candle. Lit first on Christmas Eve,it celebrates the coming
of Jesus, the Light of the World.Jesus, who came once in our human flesh and blood as a tiny babe in
Bethlehem's manger,is present with us in His Word and Sacraments as we journey through this life onour way to our true home in heaven. He promises to come again in glory to take us to that heavenly
home. Whoever follows Jesus will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.(John 8:12b)
God give you HOPE this Advent season as you PREPARE to celebrate with JOY the LOVE of

CHRIST our Savior!

The hymnwriter answers it this way: “This, this is Christ the king” (LSB 370:1). They both want to leave us with no doubt regarding the identity of this Child. COLLECTION FOR TEMPORARY AID PROGRAM (TAP) For TAP to meet the needs of people in Crawford County they depend on regular contributions of basic food items and children's clothing. They always need canned goods of all types.

Many necessities can't be purchased with food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Aid Program SNAP); paper towels, toilet paper, diapers and personal care items like soap, shampoo and laundry detergent. So, donations of these kinds of donations are particularly welcome.

Cash donations are also very helpful as they enable TAP to buy in quantity and take advantage of sales. They buy ONLY food. If you'd like to give a monetary donation, please give it to Linda Kuhlmann, our church secretary, who will make sure that it goes to TAP at the end of the month.

St.John's donation location is the table underneath the bulletin boards in the front entrance, between the offices and the Fellowship Hall. TAP is located at 210 S. 25th Street. in Denison and is open Mon-Thr 9:00AM-Noon. Or call Connie McGee if you have questions at 263-3538.

If you have adult-sized clothing to donate, TAP asks that you take them to West Central Community Action at 145 N. 7th Street in Denison. PH: 712-263-3538. HOURS: M - F, 9:00 - 3:00

Letter to the members of St. Luke, Ricketts

Brothers and Sisters in Christ of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Ricketts,

St. John, Charter Oak would like to recognize your sixty-nine years of ministry in the area and the many ways in which God has used you and worked through you. God has blessed many people, both individuals and families through your congregation’s dedication to sharing His love in Word and sacrament.

Our arms are open to you and our prayers will be with you as you now seek new fellowship. May our God guide and direct each of you to your new church homes.

Thank you for your decades of partnership in the Gospel. Remember that our true home is in Heaven and that you yourselves have been built into living stones; each one a temple of the Holy Spirit. Together, we are the church, wherever two or more are gathered together in Jesus’ name.

Be these things as they may, we realize the genuine and deep sorrow of this time, and hope that you know that you have our respect, our sympathy and our prayers.

Well done, good and faithful servants.

In Christ,
The Elders and congregation of

St.John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa

STEWARDSHIP | Finding Financial Peace

God is the owner of everything (Psalm 24:1-2; Psalm 89:11) and bestows financial blessings upon us that we might be good stewards in managing them according to His desire.

As the hymn goes, "We give the but Thine one, what 'er the gift might be. All that we have is Thine alone, a trust oh God from Thee."

These financial blessings also have the potential for great temptation, idolatry and even leading people from saving faith (Matthew 6:24; 1 Timothy 6:9-10).

Let's face it, we all know that financial mismanagement brig a lot of heartache.

Another fact is that excessive debt often keeps us from giving sacrificially and experiencing the joy of giving; and from generously supporting our churches, pastors, professional church workers, missionaries, district and synod ministries.

Iowa District West in Convention June 24-26, 2018 voted to encourage congregations to utilize a recourse called Financial Peace University (FPU) by Dave Ramsey which approaches money management from a Christian perspective and has been proven to help many practice better and God-pleasing money management.

Before undertaking Ramsey's course, please read the following preview;  Rev. Jonathan Conner, Zion, Manning has written at the request of the Synod a helpful “Preview and Review of Financial Peace University” that faithfully, but kindly, points out where Ramsey’s theology departs from our own and presents helpful suggestions for Lutheran pastors and lay leaders who would like to use FPU in their congregations.
