  • Blood Drive- TUES Feb. 8, 12:30 PM at Charter Oak-Ute H.S.
  • Scholarship Fund- A scholarship fund for students planning to attend synodical colleges of seminaries has been established and is being added to the Memorial list. If you would like to contribute to this fund, ask about it in the office.
  • St. John's Human Care Committee- is looking for volunteers (either individuals or couples) interested in helping to coordinate efforts to provide for the physical needs of people in our community. If you have a heart for the needy and would like to help, please talk to either Pastor or President Bill Magill.
  • 8th Graders & their Parents- The District Confirmands' Retreat is Feb. 19-21 at Camp Okoboji. The retreat prepares youth who are nearing confirmation for life in the church after confirmation. Adult chaperones accompany youth from their congregation. See Pastor Merrill for forms or if you have any questions.

    According to United Press International (UPI),  "Sectarian violence in Nigeria has left one village almost empty... Human Rights Watch and other groups say the violence began in Jos Jan. 17, apparently sparked by a Muslim resident's plan to rebuild a house burned down during riots in 2008."

    Please pray for Brent & Eugene's safety. Pray also for peace and end to violence between Muslims and Christians in Jos and Nigeria.

    Proposed Wedding Policy

    A proposed Wedding Policy for St. John will be discussed at the Annual Voter's Meeting on Wednesday evening. The policy affirms the Bible's teaching on marriage and deals with current issues such as same-sex marriage and pre-marital cohabitation. Copies of the proposal are available in the narthex. We encourage memebers to take one home and review it, then come to the Voter's Meeting with your input.

    Social Ministry Committee

    The Church Council is seeking to expand the work of the Social Ministry Committee and is looking for volunteers (individuals or couples) who would be innterested in co-coordinating efforts to provide for the physical needs of people in our community. Projects may include collections for the Temporary Aid Pantry (TAP), distribution of food or blankets to needy families, and similar efforts. If you have a heart for the needy and are willing to help, please talk to Pastor Merrill or Congregational President Bill Magill.

    Relief efforts for Haiti

    Material Donations Needed for Haiti Relief

    Material donations are requested within the next two weeks by LCMS partners for shipment to Haiti in response to Jan. 12 massive earthquake. Two 40-foot shipping containers will be loaded with donated supplies and shipped to an intact Port-au-Prince depot, to arrive within three weeks of the earthquake.
    The following material items have been requested:
    • Bottled water
    • Canned food with pop tops
    • Peanut butter
    • Dry rice
    • Dry beans
    • Dishwashing liquid
    • Bedding (sheets, pillows, etc.)
    • Shovels and tools for rebuilding
    • Buckets
    • Antibacterial ointment
    • Band aids
    • Washcloths
    • Soap
    • Deodorant
    • individual packets of disinfectant wipes
    • Tooth brushes
    • Tooth paste
    • Band-aids
    • First aid ointment
    • Clean, used clothing in good condition (Must be sorted by type such as women's clothing, children's clothing, etc., and boxed and labeled).

    This effort is a partnership of LCMS World Relief and Human Care (LCMS WR-HC), the LCMS Florida-Georgia District, MISSION: HAITI, and Orphan Grain Train (OGT). Once the items have been received and packed in containers LCMS World Relief and Human Care will assist with overseas shipping charges. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti (ELCH) as well as OGT and MISSION: HAITI partners in Haiti will receive the containers of donations in Port-au-Prince and oversee their distribution.
    Financial donations are also urgently required for the long-term Lutheran response in Haiti.     LYF Soup-To-Go

    The LYF will be selling cold soup in to-go containers on Sunday, January 31 after the church service. Soups for sale include chili, chicken noodle, and bean-and-ham. Costs will be $3/pint, $6/quart, and $24/gallon. Pre-orders will be taken, but are not necessary. We will be in the church lobby after church to take pre-orders.. Proceeds will be used to send youth to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans in July.

    It is time to renew subscriptions to the Lutheran Witness. The price for 2010 to subscribe through the church office is just $18.96. Individual subscriptions directly through the Witness' website is $22.00
